test prints and toning
5 different kinds of fabric. In each row the first one was washed in water before printing, the second was as-is, the third I sized with cornstarch. A few different experiments with the paper negatives (row 1 middle image, only half waxed; row 1 and 3 first image, negative sewn together out of two pieces of paper). And finally row 4 images 1 and 2 are my first toning experiments (bleached with borax, toned with tea). More toning will happen this week and then I will decide which fabric I like most, and which toning technique will work best.

After several weeks of recovering, thinking, planning, ordering chemicals, waiting for chemicals to arrive, buying fabric samples, and sketching I was finally able to make some test prints today. I will experiment with toning these cyanotypes to get colors other than blue and then hopefully I'll be able to figure out a way to make them big.

Residency Prep
Residency 3 is just a few days away and I am finishing up a few last things. Here are some images of the finished light boxes. I've managed to finish the animation, but the file is a little too large to post online right now, I will figure out how to do that after the residency. It feels good to be finishing things up, but I am a bit nervous about feedback. The boxes look more handmade than I would have liked, and installing the images/turning on and off the lights in the back will be more complicated than anticipated. I will need to rethink this process next semester.

Boston Young Contemporaries
I am excited to announce that two of my large maps were accepted into the Boston Young Contemporaries exhibit this summer. The opening reception will be on Friday, July 26th and the exhibit will be up through the end of August. While these maps already feel kind of old (being from last semester), I am still very excited to be showing them. Now to solve the problem of framing and transporting such large pieces...

The Errand and the Epiphany
Title inspiration comes from several of Rebecca Solnit's books, links in my current reading list on the right of this page.
